The man who “served tea to Paul Bowles, William Burroughs, Jack Kerouac, Mick Jagger…”

Finally I brought him his print, he was very happy, I was happy to find him… since several people I photographed 4 years ago have died. The Waiter

Wonderful that you found him again! I remember that photo very well.
“several people I photographed 4 years ago have died” …sad transience.

We looked a long time for him:

I lost his address, then they told us that he passed away.

great that you bring them the prints!

Now he is photographed twice which makes his chances slim ;-)) Sorry for such a black humor. I really wish him being well…

This looks like the waiter at the Café Tingis in the Petit Socco. Is this man still alive and working there? Many thanks for the pictures.

John, it is him! he doesn’t work anymore, he is retired. if I am not wrong he told me that he worked there for 40 years.
Kirill, he was already slim, when I saw him this time.. puhhh at first I was a little shocked ;(
November 29th, 2007 at 16:15
He looks younger now than 4 years ago!
November 29th, 2007 at 20:07
thinking of it, this picture is the only one that is (almost) vertical, at least of those you’ve shown in your series. how comes there aren’t any? conscious choice? just a case? I was wondering for some time now..
November 29th, 2007 at 21:40
er war schon immer dünn . mitte der 90er habe ich am petit socco bei ihm das erste mal was getrunken und mich dann gegenüber rasieren lassen :-))übrigens auch sehr markant der frisörchef .
geiles bild

Eva, to me there is more information on a horizontal motive then on the vertical one.
Manuel, ;))) yes the hair dresser from the other side, very nice man.
November 30th, 2007 at 08:12
hmmm, thanks for your answer, Stefan… I disagree though.
November 30th, 2007 at 09:11
interesting points both stefan & eva. david alan harvey mentioned on his blog some time ago that he prefers horizontals as well ? i personally feel that both v/h are =. suppose it’s just a preference or opinion like anything else. i recently just completed a series of street fotos in tijuana for the month of November on my blog & almost all
the images are verticals. even now looking at these
images it’s difficult for me to imagine them being stronger as horizontals ?
November 30th, 2007 at 17:21
Robert, I give you an example,
http://www.stefan-rohner.net/portfolio/morocco07/014.jpg
http://www.stefan-rohner.net/portfolio/morocco07/022.jpg
what if we take this two pictures in vertical format? how would we do it?
November 30th, 2007 at 18:12
Stefan, nobody, at least not me, has said to make vertical frames out of horizontal ones, the horizontal has to be born as such from the start.
November 30th, 2007 at 19:09
Eva, nobody said that you said something similar. I am asking questions.
November 30th, 2007 at 19:56
With your examples, Stefan, you link to pictures that are born horizontal. I don’t think you can compare them, or want to make them into vertical ones, not every situation or picture is good for both horizontal and vertical.
You said that horizontal pictures contain more information. There I don’t agree, I do think it’s more difficult to make a good composition in vertical ones, but not that there’s less information. When I make a picture I put in the information I want it to contain, and sometimes vertical is called for, like the waiter picture, or this one:

http://www.stefan-rohner.net/portfolio/viacruzis/001.html
or this:

These pictures are born vertical, with the information they need, I think..
November 30th, 2007 at 22:18
where does the square frame fit into this ideology?
November 30th, 2007 at 22:22
the horizontal frame could be a symptom of to much television ? Where does circles fit in ? I guess
i should throw out my Rolleis !! This sounds like a ludicrous concept; anyway thank god for opinions.

Robert, ideology? where? I read three opinions here, yours, Stefan’s and mine, no ideology or ludicrous concepts… no one is trying to convince the other of the opposite, just exposing the own thoughts about the argument.
December 1st, 2007 at 10:39
“ideology, ludicrous concept?”
Robert, where? did I miss something?
